Dependence on the Internet

Thanks to the well documented weather here in Cumbria last week, our entire town found itself without internet from Thursday night through to Sunday morning. Compared to what happened elsewhere in the county it's a minor inconvenience, but it's made me realise how much we depend upon it.

Radio Cumbria were making regular announcements about school and major road closures, but quite often the presenter would tell folk to "check the website for full details". It made things awkward at work as well as we were without email.

So, could PHers cope without it?

Absolutely not. I would be utterly screwed to be honest. It is interesting to consider the sheer volume of data that we consume in comparison to even 5 years ago, let alone 10 or 20. I often find myself fidgety if I am not consuming information from multiple sources - e.g. I will sit watching the TV with a laptop or iPhone on the go. Whether this is a good or bad thing is another matter altogether.

If one day the internet was simply gone, I'm sure we would adapt as always but I'm another information-we - tv, phone and laptop (usually with multiple browsers/games/apps open) all at once.

Our phone line went down and we were 4 odd weeks without it... You get used to not having it again after 3 but it isn't easy

I too am utterly dependant on the internet. I don't watch TV so most of my time is spent on it.
