Thought I would have a look at the latest torrents to see if there is anything worth a download.... I must add that I only download difficult to get and things I cant get on DVDs as most of their stuff is camera based and as such just aint worth watching cause the quality ruins it so I prefer to buy DVDs instead.

So after having a look online I notice this:

last I heard was that court case, big fines, jail and then last time I looked all the old stuff was on there, but no new torrents for a few months and then I got bored... is it back online properly now?

Isn't it strange how people only ever seem to visit torrent sites "for hard to find stuff".

Clearly the torrent sites are all completely missing a trick when they host current Hollywood Blockbusters and TV shows. Just think how much better they'd get on if they only hosted that hard to find stuff!

Maybe the OP should pop down to the nearest sink estate to ask the smackheads if they've picked up anything decent in any of their recent burglaries? After all, if you don't care that it's stolen, why should you care who stole it?

I use it mainly for books that are free to download rather than for movies, I sometimes use it for a series that has gone off iplayer or for one i refuse to pay the bbc for after all why should i pay twice to see something i missed the first time round.

I tried to use the places for illegal videos but the quality is that bad i rather go and watch it down at the cinema, so there is no point.

Yes, that was extremely irritating. Whilst I prefer the share-ratio private trackers for the majority of 720p stuff, mininova was definitely the best public torrent site, was pretty gutted to see they'd capitulated to the courts. Just as they rose from suprnova's ashes I hope another decent offering will appear soon enough.

Also the site I used that announced when all the good BR/DVDrips of films were leaked seems to be in copyright trouble. http://scenereleases.info/

That, coupled with this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8381097.stm makes it a very bad week for file sharers.

Very . Unlike the OP I am more than happy to say that I find them very useful for the latest PC and Wii games, as well as all the latest films, quite often before they're released to shops on bluray or DVD. And it's not just crappy cams, plenty of high quality releases too.

Virgin have just started monitoring torrent usage, initialy to get an idea of how much is legitamate and how much isn't, but not sure if they measn they're going to starte getting stroppy with people using encrypted ones.

I expect Virgin has forced out a large number of filesharers thanks to their overzealous bandwidth throttling (yes I know their XXL service doesn't currently use this, but for allw e know it may do soon)

You've got to admire their resilience. Their 4 founders jailed, fined 2 and a half million pounds, apparently bought out by a copywright respecting company and yet still going strong.

Tis because this isn't a business - you'd just shut down and try something else - this is an ethical battle for them. A bit like Stallman and the GNU extremism - 'information wants to be free' etc. Basically a fundamental disagreement with the power of the large copyright organisations (which, even from a non-biased point of view, do misuse their power in influencing US law, producing utter abortions of laws like the DMCA). And when ethical battles escalate, they effectively become religious wars. And I believe these guys are still fighting because it's a religious war to them. And they have a LOT of supporters - little people of course, rather than the big corporations they're fighting against, but enough to give them some courage. Demonstrations have been held, etc.

Fundamentally you can't have *functional* copyright control of digital media unless the corporations have some way of owning your computer, or a subsection of your computer. Instead of the entire machine being under your control, part of it must defer to the decisions made by a copyright agency of some sort (abstracted). A lot of people rage against this - most techies would consider such remote control as malware, and I guess it's just one step from the PC becoming a content *delivery* device, rather than something that you own and control. That's a lot less appealing to me, but I'm in the Pirate Bay camp even though I don't steal software or music...

Honestly, these sorts of comments are real low signal-to-noise ratio stuff. You're not adding signal, you're basically saying 'I know where to get stuff, you don't, na na na-na na!!!' and that's pretty juvenile.

I'm not part of the 'file-sharing' scene so I guess that makes me a 'noob'. But if I wanted more music, videos etc, I could fairly assume that you, as a 1337 member of whatever network you use (probably IRC or newsgroups), have plenty of content on your network.
