Sound stopped working

Two things I've seen that cause this. May not help you at all though - good luck.
1. Is your soundcard plugged into the right socket on the back of the soundcard. On my soundcard you need to get a torch down there to read the crappy symbols.
2. Does your sound card use Digital Sound out - which has turned itself off on my PC a couple of times. On XP I think you get to this through Control Panel / Sound and Audio Devices (but my office PC won't let me get at it).
