Looking to get myself a Laptop in the January sales, the one I want at PC World is slightly over budget though frown. What are the chances of getting a few quid knocked off?

When I last went in, they were utter tosspots and refused to entertain any kind of deal. Amusingly, I was approached by a guy nearby from an independent computer retailer, and followed him down there in my car, ending up with a FAR better deal hehe

I always manage to get a few quid off in there.

Just ask for a discount, if that doesn't work then a good trick is to refuse the extended warranty then when they're trying to push it say to them "I'll take it if you knock the price off of the PC"

You can then go home with your discounted PC and immediately cancel the warranty and get your money back.

Seems they get much better commission on the warranty.

PC world (and most large retailers) use a Map pricing scheme, so its technically illegal to sell you it at anything lower than the map price. Now wether the laptop is up at above the map price I have no idea, but thats usually why these places tend not to haggle.

Have you looked online at the likes of CCL online? or other internet retailers, PC imo are usually very overpriced. Post up what lappy your looking for and Im sure the Pistonhead collective can find it cheaper than PC wold

Look at ebuyer and perhaps get the laptop you want within your budget?

(I don't work for ebuyer but I am very pleased with the price and spec of this laptop I have - oh, they don't haggle either!)

I bought a laptop on behalf of the MIL a few months ago in PC World.

The laptop was only £400, and they refused to budge on that, but i got Windows 7, Norton, Office 2007, Photoshop, a Case Logic Laptop bag and a set of Sennheiser headphones bundled in for an extra £50.

So they may not budge on the computer price, but they may on the extras...

I'm looking at the moment at the Dell Inspiron 1545 however apart from Dell there are only a few places that seem to do them.

There are other similar spec machines about (Acer, HP, Packard Bell, Toshiba) but Dell are the only ones I've had consistantly good reviews about.

Max budget is £450 (that really is top)

I received a £30 voucher from PC Word in the post the other day. How much over budget is it?

What versions of Office 2007 and Photoshop did they thrown in?! Surely they both retail on their own in the £000's?

Why not buy from DELL then? The £429 one on Dell's website has more memory and a larger HD.

The black comes in a £450 atm and the colour at £500. Hoping the Jan sales will bring that down a bit though (£400 is what I wanted to pay but willing to stretch the budget to £450 if able).

Mainly tbh I'm just tightfisted and wanted to see what I could get off. Figure the PH collective have many years of trying to get a better deal so where better to ask wink

Has crossed my mind, everytime I go through the options though I struggle to keep it below £500!

Just bought my Mum (for Xmas and because she's the company secretary!) a laptop from the Dell outlet store. £300 all in for a certified refurbished (so good as new) Inspiron 1545, dual core, 3GB RAM, 15.6" screen, 250GB HDD, DVD writer and so on.

Basically a very decent laptop for bugger all money! Reckon you could get yourself a tiptop one for £500.

fwiw I got my netbook at online price (only 20-30 quid off, but still) in Comet by chatting them up for a while and then cheekily asking them if they did 'student discount'

I found them rigid on the price of the laptop, but willing to cut a deal if you buy some ancillaries/software/accessories at the same time. I find them a bit overbearing when you walk in and just want a mooch around too.

In all fairness, they really aren't that competitive anyway. I spoke to a guy about a netbook and he wasn't interested, instead insisting I wanted a £600 laptop. No really, I have a laptop, I want a 11.6" netbook and I want to spend no more than £300. And no, I don't want a 10" screen, 11.6 is my bare minimum...

I walked away in the end, walked into Comet and walked out again 5 minutes later with what I wanted, and for £30 cheaper...

Office 2007 was only £50 on offer anyway, but it was Photoshop Elements so not expensive. All in the stuff i got for £50 was worth about £250 retail.
