Can anyone help, I have a problem with automatic page numbering on word 2007, when I choose insert--> page number it comes up on the document as Page\merge format then page in pale grey. If I delete the page\format it enters the number I choose on every page. The only way round it I have found is to delete page\merge and then insert a page break on each page then add the page number manually and click the link with previous section icon (which seems to unlink the pages). Given I need to prepare a 100 page document, that is not going to be a lot of fun!

help please!!

Right-click the stuff in the grey box, choose "Toggle field codes".

Thanks that put a number 1 on the first page and took the page\merge format code off the other pages which remained unnumbered, I manually entered 2 on the second page and it put 2 on all the subsequent pages.

Any ideas?

Oh, I tried it on the second page ( I had selected different first page) and it numbered the others just fine.

Many, many thanks

Sounds like the header / footer setup is screwed up. Go into the header / footer setup and see if "Different First Page" is ticked.
