So, having not been in contract for quite some time, and finally deciding that my current phone is pants, I decided to look around.

I noticed that most of the contract lengths now appear to be 18/24mths (for any half-decent phone). I think that is bks, so I went onto ebay and bought an unlocked LG KM900 for a cracking deal (I have a BBerry that does most of my mail/work stuff, so I only want my own phone to maintain my old number + browse whilst commuting).

I then went to O2 and got a cracking "Simplicity" deal - 700m / 1400 texts + free internet, all for the princely sum of £20 per month - and whats more, a 1 month rolling contract.

I phoned the Crapphone wehouse to cancel and after the usual "babe I love you so, please don't go" routine I finally got put on hold. Next thing I get told that I have to WRITE in to request termination.

WRITE in? I didn't have to WRITE in when you wanted me to join up...

WTF is all that about? I fking hate scams like that. Clearly it's there because they know lots of people can't be arsed to WRITE in.

bds.

But I've written in this time smile

So, O2 Simplicity - what a cracking deal!

Email them. It's classed as "having it in writing".

That is so they can say your letter never arrived, even if you send it recorded delivery.

I had to give a written notice to cancel mine mobile phone contract in the past - thought that was pretty much standard?

And yes, virtually all new contracts appear to be 18-24 months long. No doubt, this is to subsidise the iphone/blackberry phone prices.

doesn't asking for the PUK code just terminate the contract?

PITA that you have to wait now until all has gone through before getting your PAC code?

Nope - and that was the main reason I phoned them.

Wouldn't it be easier for us punters though eh? (and hence, why they don't allow it...) Tossers!!!

Been on one of their deals for over 18 months. £10 a month with 300 minutes and 500 texts. Excellent value for money. And O2 works at my house, unlike a couple of the others.

Oh. Everywhere I've ever dealt with has accepted email as a form of written notice.

Looks like they're deliberately trying to make it difficult for you.

Don't make the mistake of asking for your PUK code next time you want to cancel your contract...

Your new provider will be very confused when you tell them it :P

yes When I moved from Vodafone, I didn't have to put anything in writing. I just told them I was leaving and requested a PAC (I think that's the one you mean, port authorisation code) and gave that to O2.

The whole 18/24 month contract thing really irks me, I'm a simple man and only want a Nokia 6700 which retails for £175, and my contract with O2 is £20 p/m so they'll be getting £360 or maybe £480 off me! I appreciate they are providing me with 600 mins and unlimited texts but having spent a few years in the mobile industry I know that the air time doesn't cost much.

If you request a PAC code, then as soon as your new provider has ported your number, the old one will cease. If you do not want to port your number, yes you need to write a letter.

Will in the loyalty team will not have written the rules, whether he is a fktard or not is another matter wink

Upon asking for my PAC code, I was told by said fktard that I needed to write in to terminate my contract. I wouldn't get my PAC code until they had receipt of this.

My new provider will be sending me a sim out today. However, my existing number will not be assigned to it until I give them my PAC code.

Hmm, was not the case when I rang T mobile, they sent me a PAC via text. Maybe it's an O2 thing (CPW O2 have to follow O2 rules). If that's the case, I would advise recorded delivery.
