Have a 60GB iPod which has run out of space. I've cut all singles and some others to fit.

Ideally I would like to store everything (music, videos etc.) which I used to when I had a lot less stuff.

So thought I'd get a 160GB iPod, however they're not cheap (but I suppose good value per GB compared to other iPods). £180 delivered from Amazon is the cheapest I can see.

Anyway, before I go and buy one, does anyone know (guess) what prices will do? Will they go down in price in the coming months? Since Apple announced nothing iPod related yesterday, I assume they'll be around at current prices for a good few months yet?

I initially thought, sod it, I'll get a 120GB cheap but they're MORE than the 160GB!!!! Absurd sellers out there. (I'm not interested in 2nd hand either, want the full guarantee etc.).

Also, does anyone know if there's any difference in sound quality of the latest iPod classic over the iPod photo I have? I have everything encoded as AAC VBR 256 and MP3 192.

Buy the 160gb & enjoy it, the prices will do what the prices will do.

Outputting to TV is not an issue - cables easily found on ebay, just make sure that the file is sized correctly is you have ripped a DVD.

Sound quality is spot on from a 160Gb classic, again ensuring decent source / bitrates on your media.

Don't forget that they turn up regularly in the Apple refurbished section of the web shop. Check there regularly.

Hmmmmm, I see the volume limit on 6g iPods cannot be unlocked.

Now, much of my music is fine and in the house ok but some stuff it "properly" mastered with decent dynamic range but is quiet so needs turning up. To top that, I'm a little hard of hearing (from birth) so need something that's not quiet.

If I got an uncapped one from the US (somehow!) would that be fine? OR would the cap get applied once I sync up with my computer? Would future software updates apply the cap as it "sees" me as in the EU?

All the iPods were updated in September, the usual time for their annual update. Apple prices tend to stay at list price wherever you go, if they are on offer, they get bundled with speakers or a case or something. One option for getting a cheaper one is to get a refurb from the Apple Store site, the current offer is for the pervious model Nano though. Or try for a pre owned one from somewhere like a Gamestation store.

rumour is that this could be the last year of the classic design ipod as well. With ipod touch capacity doubling every year the old classic design will be squeezed out.

I guess they could keep an ultra high capacity classic around - 256gb? - but you have to wonder how many would sell.

That's because at one time Apple couldn't get cheap 160gb drives, so discontinued that size and 120gb was the max. Looks like they can get them again and have now decided only to do that one.

The 160GB was always slightly thicker than the 120GB (mine is). I don't know if the 'new' 160GB is or not.
