My old 60gb ipod is now full and not even half my music on it so went looking for a new classic. Pleased to see the max is now 160gb which is perfect for me.

So I think the 160gb came in in 6th gen but now we are on 7th gen - come someone confirm the benefits of 7th gen over 6th, I think genius is an additional feature which I never use so wondering if I am better off saving some dosh and getting the earlier one. There again I have read reports of 160gb 6th gen being prone to crashing.

To further confuse is there now an 8th gen or is this just an ebay error?

As someone who has absolutely no experience of Apple products let alone iPods, I would imagine there is little difference between 6/7/8th gen versions. Later ones might have better screens, but a Touch would be better for video but you only get 64GB max I think so no good.

Come to think about it, how the heck have you managed to accumulate 120+GB of music? Is it stored in WAV format? tongue out

The 5G was the last hard drive iPod to get the white (or black) plastic front facing. After that its the iPod classic (6G) with the black or silver aluminium front. As far as I know, the only differences since then has been hard drive size and firmware updates. There were originally 80 and 160GB models, they were replaced by one 120GB model, and that was replaced by the current 160GB model. I really wouldn't call the drive updates a 7G or 8G.

Dead easy, got over 1TB (1000 GB) on the computer at home and it's still growing. CDs have become obsolete since the digital revolution, I'd have nowhere to store them all.

because I rip my CDs to itunes to play through computer or ipod/s. I rip at 256kbps for decent quality. And I have 2000+ CDs

Useful link thanks - looks like they are calling the 2007 model 160gb 6th gen and the 2009 model 7th gen

Must have been a few other changes as the 2009 model seems to have lost some battery life?

That does not bother me but the (apparent) crashes when syncing with itunes 9.0 does, just wondering whether the 2009 model fixed that or whether it would be a firmware fix that would update the older model anyway.

see here for example http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/09/17/itunes-9-k...
