The other half is looking at HP laptops but there seems to be so many different models available I cant see which is best and HP's web site is not that helpful, looking to spend between £400 and £500 needs to be 15" and have a numeric keypad. Any suggestion gratefully received.

Any reason why HP then? if you have a set budget in mind is there anything else specific to your budget? i.e. what will it be used for, just internet and the odd email?
Samsung and Acer make decent laptops these days that fit into your budget.

And now you can go back to looking at normal laptops , and broaden the range again smile

Errr, can't say I have. That bad huh? I tend to fix main problems (software related) myself but guess when it comes to warranty...I will be looking for a new laptop myself soon and Acer WAS on my list.

Hi markys, this model appears to be quite good for the money. HP Pavilion DV6-1133ea

Hasn't got HD drive (blu ray) though but decent build all the same.

My company used to be an Acer dealer. We are not any longer.... HP and Lenovo have always provided excellent support.

HP Pavilion dv6-2112ea or dv6-2112sa lok good options for you

In order of worst to best performance (i'll probably get slated here..)

Intel:
celeron
pention
Core 2 duo
I3
I5
I7

Any core 2 duo or better with 4GB of ram with windows 7 64 bit should do you , based on what you have stated as your requirements smile

I would check to see if the HP you want has vents on the bottom. If it does like my old one it will be a real pain in the ass to use anywhere away from a desk.

It'll either get too hot and shut down or burn you, even while it's just browsing the web.

My Apple has no vents on the bottom and runs cold most of the time, meaning it really is a laptop. My old Dell had no vents underneath either and was fine.

IMHO it's a massive design flaw for laptops to have base vents and not enough is made of the issue when you read reviews etc.

Excellent point - have a new Dell laptop from work - mid range business model, with vents underneath. As mentioned, makes it a pain to use as a laptop ...
