We've had the same broadband package since 2005 on a 1mb package (not the quickest but useable)and over the last summer we've been consistently getting 1.5mbps. However, just before Christmas the speed has gradually been declining and now all we're getting is 0.2mbps. After many phonecalls with out provider and visits from BT and on site engineers, they've come back and said that they cannot offer any other considerations as we live a distance from the exchange.

It says on the BT website that our postcode should receive up to 3mbps and a stable 1mbps. What really annoys me is that we've been getting good speeds up until about 2 months ago and, now it's slow, they're saying that this is normal.

We have asked for the MAC code because we don't feel that this is justified.

Anybody in the know with this sort of stuff? I'm not too bad with computers etc and have been running all sorts of diagnostics and speed tests to try and sort it but to no avail.

Cheers in advance!

ETA: bks, horrendous!

How far from the exchange are you?

If you're in a LLU area then you can try www.bethere.co.uk or alternatively you could get a Virgin Media 'upto 50mb' service if you're in one of their areas.

About 2.5 miles. What's an LLU area? Checked out that website and put in my BT phone number and came up with an error message saying that they couldn't offer any of their services on that number!?

Oh and we're not in a Virgin area! Dammit!

Thanks though! thumbup

Have a look at Sam Knows Broadband, there's some interesting information and comparisons on there. It should be able to show you what is possible on your particular exchange.

Cheers for that, but you wouldn't Adam and Eve it; since going out to see the neighbours about what speeds they're getting, it's jumped up to 1.9mbps! That as fast as we've ever had it! Fingers crossed it holds!

Cheers all!

Nice! Wish I could get their fibre optic service. I've got a mate who's on the 50mb service but consistently gets about 23mb. Wouldn't argue with that!!
