Hi Guys... is there any freebie software out there that can easily tell you what ethernet devices are on your own home network? I have a external HDisk with ethernet connectivity but cannot seem to see it / address it (Using Windows 7)

Thanks

Ping will only work if the devices have IP addresses, hence my question.

Nope it was given to me, so I thought it would make a good backup device on my home network, anyway of seeing the addresses of devices on your network?

Ethereal / Wireshark. It will sniff everything on your network.

How do you allocate IP addresses to your other devices ? If you have a router with DHCP enabled then you should be able to look at the management interface of that and see connected devices. It may even show unknown devices which do not have address leases yet.

Will only work if the device in question is generating traffic.

This is what i'd suggest, bang in the range as 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.255 and it'll then list any connected ip addresses.

Just another thought -on my LAN ,if I access it on my browser ( something like 192.168.2.1) ,it's got a DHCP client list ,that shows all connected addresses .
