Righty ho, had sky+ for about 5 years, and to turn it all on I do the following, using the sky box.
Turn on TV.
Turn on Sky box, and telly then displays sky channel.
Today due to a malfunction, I had the sky+ box replaced with a brand new one, same make, Thompson.
But...................
Turn on TV.
Turn on Sky box, telly does not display sky.
I have to press TV/AV on telly remote to change it to sky. Why I wonder? did the old sky box send a signal to the telly saying "I am on" and the new box doesnt send a signal, any ideas guys?
All the guy did today was to remove the sky box, and replace it with a new one.

I might be wrong, but is there an option on a Sky box called Scart Control?
I don't have one anymore so I can't check at the moment.

Still going nowhere, my thoughts are this.
When I turn on the DVD player, the TV defaults automatically to the DVD player, as the old box did, so obviously the DVD player must send a signal, or the telly detects a signal and defaults to it.
Maybe my new sky box doesnt have this. All the guy did yesterday was to remove sky box, and put a replacemnt in its place.
So I still have to press TV/AV button on the telly remote to change it to HDMI1 for sky box.

sky + doesn't have a hdmi plug, a sky+ hd on the other hand does.
you old sky + box was connected via scart which has scart control which will switch the tv over. hdmi doesn't have this feature
Old sky+ box did indeed have a HDMI to connect to the Tv. Not sure what you mean by "Sky+, and Sky+HD, I thought Sky+ was HD?, anyway when I got the HD telly 5 years ago, I had to upgrade my existing sky box to sky+ to receive the HD programmes. Having just said that, looked at the books which came with the units, the old one says its a "Sky HD box", the one put in the other day says "Sky+HD box", what the difference is I don't know, I do know I needed the first one to receive HD programmes. Both Thompson units.you old sky + box was connected via scart which has scart control which will switch the tv over. hdmi doesn't have this feature

Is this a SKY+ box we are talking about or a SKY HD box? Also what TV do you have?
HDMI does have a switching signal, it is called CEC but isnt utilised very well with sky.
Once we know exactly what gear you have then a solution can be formulated
Its a sky+HD box, to a HD Panasonic telly. Spoke to the fitter just now, said the Sky+HD box doesnt have a switching signal, (Also said he was surprised it worked on the other box), strange that the old box did, and worked fine. He may be right, so be making some phone calls Monday. If it was in the old box, why not keep same feature in new box.HDMI does have a switching signal, it is called CEC but isnt utilised very well with sky.

I know its not the HDMI plug on the telly, I switched 1 and 2 around, and when I put the DVD player on, telly switched straight away to the DVD.
I mean its not big deal, but means having to use the Sky box, and telly box to turn it all on, and if it worked with the old box, why don't it work with the new one?
Oh someone mentioned the Scart on/off in set up, tried that, made no difference. So who has a new Sky+HD box, and does the telly recognise it automatically?

With a Panasonic you can set it to default to HDMI1 upon being switched on.
This will stop you having to press the TV/AV button.
Menu/Setup/Other Settings/Power on Preference/Select AV.
Thats for a Panasonic V10.
This is not quite correct, that will cause the TV to switch to whatever AV device is active at that time, so if the DVD player is on your TV will power on to the DVD player. This will stop you having to press the TV/AV button.
Menu/Setup/Other Settings/Power on Preference/Select AV.

It uses the CEC signal in the HDMI so if your sky box dosent use it (as the engineer said) then the sky box wont be seen as active when you power on the TV (even when it is actually active)
I must say that i have set many SKY HD boxes up with many TV's and in my experiance it generally works fine on Panasonic TV's, i havent yet come across a SKY HD box that dosent auto switch the TV, if it dosent work its usually the TV that is not complient.
Edit to add (assuming your sky R/C is programmed to operate your TV volume) if you press TV then Help, the Help button actualy performs the same function as the AV button on your TV R/C, so you dont actually have to find the TV R/C to turn on sky. You can even program a macro so that pressing SKY will send the AV signal to the TV from the remote.

Tried that, works fine, tks. Not sure about the macro thingly, I will be ringing the sky guys on monday, make sure my NEW box is fully functional, still seems odd that the old box did it, and the NEW one doesnt.Edited by headcase on Saturday 6th February 19:51

Sounds as if the DVD connection is taking precedence over the Sky box HDMI input as far as the TV is concerned.
Try switching off the DVD player completely rather than leaving it on standby.
Thanks for that as well, made no difference, but as I said above, I can now do it with one box, which is better than two.Try switching off the DVD player completely rather than leaving it on standby.

And thanks for that, unfortunatly my setup doesnt have "Other Settings on it". Anyway I am down to using one box only, which is better, and will be on the blower Monday for a positive answer about the box, whether its defective or not. This will stop you having to press the TV/AV button.
