It's for 128kbit ADSL, not the more usual 512Kbit.

Yes, it would be about 2.5 - 3 times the speed of your dial up. It will also connect within 2 - 3 seconds once you've booted up your PC.

It may not be available where you live.
There's a min 12 month contract.
There may be a one-off installation charge

Not sure if they offer e-mail addresses, web space etc which you may have at the moment.

We have 128k (via NTL cable) and for surfing/emails etc it's spot in, not much slower than surfing at work

For downloading larger files, it's noticeably faster than dialup and 100Mb downloads are feasable over a period of time - which they weren't over dialup!!!

I believe the Tiscali deal is modem+setup for free?

I have heard bad stories about Tiscali though, as I'm trying to convince my Mum to join them - but she's unsure.

I use this: www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/paygo

My last bill was £13.82 inc VAT and it's the proper 512/'up to 10 times faster' service.

(edited to add: you have to pay for connection and ADSL modem as extras but I reckon payback is 10 months.)

Tiscali are reckoned to be pants if you check out www.adslguide.org (you'll find lots of info about all the UK providers there too )

Thanks for the link FunkyNige - that's a very useful website. And there was I considering a swap to Tiscali when we go broadband next month! I had heard it was all advertising and no substance, and there's the proof.
I may well stay with my existing ISP, which is Breathe. It seems you can haggle with an existing supplier quite effectively if you suggest you might stay with them when you adopt the new connection. They're offering a reasonable deal (half-price connection and first month plus possible (still negotiating!) modem bundle) and I'll also be able to retain my existing email addresses. It might be a factor worth considering when you upgrade to broadband that your new ISP may not want to support your old email address (or vice versa), and you'll hardly want to pay twice.

Or you could get your own domain and use e-mail forwarding to send your mail to your own personal address that you can keep forever, regardless of ISP.
