Problem is i want to watch it on the xbox - the file is downloaded on the PC.

So really need it to play through the media centre. Bugger.

Grab VLC, plays virtually everything and somewhat less bloated than WMP.

You might want to try converting it to VOB format (used for DVD video, works with WMP)

It shouldn't take too long as its just moves it into a different file 'container'.

If you install the matroska codec on the PC then you'll play it through windows media player, how that will translate to getting it to play on your TV via the xbox I have no idea though.... suppose it might work.

MKV is a container, it contains a payload which is usually H.264 encoded.

Download and install the K-Lite codec pack, contains FFDShow which will sort out most stuff very well.

FFDshow is the ffmpeg codec in a directshow filter, the same (very good) decoder that VLC uses, but without the hog UI of WMPsmile
