Mail grabbers or adsl router.
Discussion
We've currently got a mail grabber that we use to collect email vis our server (running WinProxy for internet access) from an externally hosted POP3 account. The grabber then distributes mail internally (its Tobit/DvISE).
We've run out of licences for the grabber, so I'm thinking of addding more accounts on the external POP3 server, then using an ADSL router to allow internal client PCs direct access to the mail service, avoiding the need to buy new Tobit licences.
The problems as I see it are the need for additional firewalls on client PCs (althought the router would have on, how secure is it?, more anti-virus protection to maintain on each PC (currently running Symantec server/client) and the possible loss of control over the email system - we keep the mail on the internal server for quite a while, which minimises or external hosting costs and allows us to retrieve"lost" mails.
Are there any real pitfalls in using and ADSL router on a business network, or am I worrying about nothing?
Thoughts and comments gratefully received, even if I don't fully understand all the technicalities.
Cheers
Dave
