Guys

This laptop has a fault - wont power up, fan spins for 0.5 sec, no post beep (is there one?).
I am a tech person with the service/disassembly guide for the machine - I have stripped laptop and found a screw rolling around inside which has obviously caused a problem. (The screw seems to be an extra present from acer as there none missing!).

When it boots, there is a diagnostic led near the power button that flashes a pattern (long/short/medium) but I dont know how to read the sequence and I do not have a list of them. I have searched google etc.

I wouldnt mind if it had a hard life. This laptop is 1.5 years old (out of warranty) and has been used less than 6 times in total and is owned by a charity.

Can anyone help me with the diagnosis?

TIA
Tony

Check your guarantee again. AFAIK Acer gives 2 years guarantee as standard.

Try booting off a Linux or MiniXP CD and copying important files off.
Then see if you can reinstall Windows booting from the Windows disk.

Sounds like a similar thing that happened to my acer, it was as though the disk/laptop was dead. It seems it was some kind of virus that I couldnt find any trace of. A bit like a good old fashioned virus that affects the mobo and booting from the hard drive. These days it all seems to be malaware.

Thanks for replies

the warranty card says 1 year

definately hardware problem, won't get near booting or bios setup. Changed ram etc. The flashing led gives error code but what does it mean? Btw, screen is dead
