iPhone quicktime player

Some movies and/or websites/apps start up with I assume quicktime player in full screen.
For the first few seconds volume, mute, etc controls are on screen but then disappear to allow unrestricted view. I just can't find a way of getting the fecking controls back.
Sometimes tapping a corner will do so but often not - I end up pressing the button and restarting whatever I was doing.
Clearly I'm missing something - would someone please advise the correct method?

Yes - kind-of. That works, sometimes. Not always. There seems to be no consistency...

Just tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls, then tap again to hide them.

Tap with the soft part of your finger not your finger nail.
