Hello. Please, please help before I smash up my iphone and my laptop.

When I connected my iphone to the computer for the first time in a while, a message came up saying "the device in the usb pot has malfunctioned and has not be recognised".
These are the things I have tried:
1)I tried a different iphone wire.
2)I tried a different USB port
3)I tried my wifes iphone in both ports on both wires.
4)I updated itunes.

Please help before gadget fury overwhelms me.

Ps. COuld any of you technical chaps who may be able to help, answer this question as though you were talking to your 80 year old mother please.
eg: Saying "have you checked the device management for it?" is exactly as useful as saying "I know but I am not going to tell you".

Many thanks in anticipation

Quick question...do you leave your laptop in standby when not in use or switch it off completely occasionally?

I had a similar thing with Win 7. Having trawled the internet for hours, I eventually found a suggestion to delete Podcasts from the iPhone... and amazingly it solved the problem!!

Always left in standby
Start with the simple things first. Do a complete power down including switching off at the mains and un hooking the battery. Leave for 10-15 mins and back on.

What operating system are you using? XP?

1. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop
2. Choose Manage...
3. On the left hand side of the screen, click on Device Manager
4. Are there any items with exclamation points?

Might be worth checking if your laptop manufacturer has released a recent BIOS update.

Do you also have the latest version of iTunes installed?

THe device manager has no exlaimation marks (not ev en when you press all the "+" symbols and expand each category
FUrther, with the iphone plugged into the computer it is not shown here.

I have updated itunes to try and cure this and that hasn't worked either.
Same thing with the iphone plugged in- it is not shown in itunes either

Does your machine detect any other USB device such as a flash drive?

If it used to work before, it might have been a Microsoft update that could have caused this, but only surmising.
I assume regular windows updates are run? You could try latest drivers from manufacturers website, including the BIOS.
And one other thing, when you said you had been into Device Manager and looked down the USB Device list, look for "USB Root Hub" and ensure under the "Power Management" tab that the box is NOT checked for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
I've upgraded all my vista machines to Windows 7 (doesn't help your situation though!)

Thanks a lot for your efforts DD
Ill try that all tonight.
I also assumed it was a windows update that stopped it all working.
I tried to look for a iphone driver myself but just hit a blank as though it was vista that contained the driver and not specific to the Iphone.

Out of interest- your check about the power commander bit- if the USB was switched off to save power would it still recongnise the fact that something has been shoved into the USB (which it does)

No good I am afraid. The former was not applicable to my system (according to the message) and the latter found nothing
