Spec me a multimedia machine

Ok, The last time I seriously looked into building a PC (and did) was a fair while back. The AMD Athlon was king and the processing giants were having a Ghz war.

I'm planning on building my own PC that can sit under the TV. Primarily I want it for surfing the net through the TV and watching Iplayer and on demand tv etc. Secondarily I want it for gaming and music production.

So basically, I need a fast processor, lots of ram and a decent, up to date graphics card. The sound card I can sort myself.

What sort of spec am I looking at these days? What processors are generally classed as good? Are AMD still regarded as better processors than Intel? How much ram should I be looking at? Whats a decent graphics card these days? Any recommendations on motherboards? etc.
