Hi all, I'm starting a new project at work which will be Java based.

I've never programmed with Java before and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good free online tutorial to get me started? There seems to be quite a few out there, do you have experience of which is the best?

I will ultimately be working with the TestNG framework - but think I need to start right at the beginning.

So far I've installed JDK...

Thanks in advance

I liked Thinking in Java too.

Download one of the IDE's - Eclipse is best IMO and has lots of tutorials.

Actually, I'd say don't start with an IDE initially. Just start working your way through some simple exercises and examples (e.g. from Thinking in Java), using just your favorite text editor and javac (the compiler that comes with the JDK).

Once you understand the basics of classpaths and the compiler, you'll be able to understand what an IDE is doing for you. If you start with an IDE, it adds a load of complex options, so you'll spend a lot of time just trying to figure out how the IDE works, but maybe never completely grasp the fundamental concepts.

+1

But try and take what you're learning and use it to make programs - calculate interest rates on your savings over the next few years or something. Apply it rather than just following the tutorials.
