My daughter would like to have a go at making an animation film and I think that the cheap way forwar is probably to pick up a web cam and some free software and give it a go.

I dragged out an ancient webcam that I bougth years ago to inspect the house chimneys, but that doesnt seem to work with the mac (or maybe its still full of soot? :-) )

So can anyone recommend a cheap but decent webcam that will work with a mac? Reading reviews implies that a good many dont manage to integrate with the mac very well.

Similarly how about free/cheap software?

If I have to I suppose I could use the dslr but that seems overkill.

Use your DSLR or if you have one a Digital compact, it's free and will be better quality than any webcam. If you get really into animation then consider something less cumbersome.
I used my Canon G7 and a trial of iStopmotion2 for the first animation attempts with my nephew with surprising good results (well we thought so).
Check out the iStopmotion web site for more details including a list of compatible video and stills cameras:

iStopmotion Pro was used to create the new Fiesta TV advert "This is now":

Thanks

I saw the review site, but the recommended one is £70 - bit much.

That software looks interesting - I don't watch much TV so I hadn't seen the advert in question - interesting.

I'll give it a go with the dslr and some drawings and see where we go.

Just an FYI... Quicktime X can compile images into a movie... In case you didn't want to spend immediately.
