Hi gang - please advise - my aging Dell needed one last lease of life before I committed and bought a MAC - I have an 80gig hard disc which was 98% full.
I backed it all up and inserted the XP restore disc to get a clean instalation.
All has gone well so far apart from I only have 30gig free on the HDD? wheres my other 50?, I've run disc defrag but dont know what else to try.
Thanks in advance for any help forthcoming.

Check drive manager and see what size partition XP created.

It may be the case that the system restore disk was an image of the original 30gig hard drive. So when this was copied to the new hard drive it has only created a 30GB partition even though the new drive has an 80gb capacity.

What you can try is downloading a partition manager app - this one is free http://download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-H...

and then seeing if it allows you to extend the 30GB partition to 80GB - which I'm pretty sure it will. Has a nice fairly intuitive user interface so shouldn't be too daunting.

You need to be careful when altering things like this as it's possible to stop windows from loading and/or lose data - however since you've just done a system restore that shouldn't matter - worst case scenario, you need to run the restore again.

okey dokey - bonsai - I installed the partition manager and I think what its showing me is the disk still contains all of my old stuff too!
I thought whacking in the Xp Cd would give me a clean install - obviously not.
Can some one give me a quick run down of wiping the C drive and starting from scratch please.
Thanks in advance again.

Get yourself a copy of Windirstat and you can drill down until you find where all the detritus is.

Thanks all for your suggestions- I did a big old format c: in the end and got everything back - backed up from DVD's.
I've installed Google Chrome and Picasa for internet and pictures.
However Chrome only seems to load tinternet pages if you hit the link, then it hangs and then will load if I hit refresh. Any Ideas...?
PH seems to hang a lot, is that a problem my end or PH's end?
I tested my DL speed 6mb/ps so it doesnt appear to be my end.
Had my finger hovering over the "Purchase" button at the imac store 10 minutes ago, but need to give this old clanker one more go.
