So I've been running RC which now has expired. I bought Win7 Ultimate UG, however, when I try to install I find that I ordered the 64bit version and of course get an error message as not compatible. Is there a solution? I don't really wish to buy another.

Don't upgrade. Do a fresh install.

Should still be possible even with an upgrade disc as long as there is a windows install on there previously.

Are you sure you can use an upgrade on a RC ?

You can't do an upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit and RC also not suitable for an upgrade. You can do a fresh install of it without wiping your data though...

But shirley his issue is trying to install a 64bit OS onto non 64bit hardware. I'm not sure if that's possible.

Not unless the stuff is more than a couple of years old ? Possible, but not probable.

My laptop from 3.5 years ago was 64 bit compatible.

I get an error message: not compatableyuck
It's my fault but I read somewhere that the DVD came with both versions and ordered 64 bit thinking I could choose.

I thought you could choose when installing it?

I got home premium for my PC and was forced to install it as 32-bit, though remember thinking what I would need to do to install it as 64-bit.

Either way, would be a fresh install you would have to do though.

Does anyone still run non 64bit hardware any more?

Also, when I bought Win 7 the box contained both 32 and 64 bit versions.

If it's a retail boxed copy it should have both x86 and x64 copies on the DVD, what OS are you upgrading from? You can only upgrade to Win7 from Vista, from XP
you need to do a 'wipe and load migration' to upgrade from XP. i.e. backup your data to external drive then boot from the DVD

Yes, the only reason to have 64 bit hardware is if you use applications that can address more than 4 meg of RAM and can can also use the extra capabilities of 64bit cpu address space. Currently in the mainstream this tends to be things like Database Servers, Distributed Grid Computing Farms and high end professional workstation software like CAD and bespoke lab software.

'Some' games also benefit from 64bit.

Yes, with some tweaking, although I did a fresh install from the RC with an OEM disc, no problems.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. For more details about replacing the RC, see the Knowledge Base article KB 971767. For more information, visit the Window 7 Forum.

1) find an x86 release version in the usual places.
2) edit the cversion file to allow an upgrade from the beta (use google)
3) use the key that you paid for to authorise, it will work for x86 and x64.
