Well that's ruled out anything at all worth watching.

D'oh ! paperbag Sorry Dibbers.

A quick Google revealed a few options for 'free iPhone film downloads' but I haven't used any of them so can't vouch for legality etc.

£30 odd quid that costs. Bums.

I've been hunting around tonight and it's amazing that there's no easy free way to convert legal DVD's to a portable format.

Let me guess, technically still illegal?

No access to internet, and no access to dvd's? Huh? Well, BEFORE you get to this place, you can use downloaders for youtube, or documentaryheaven.com, you can rip DVD's using handbrake. You can buy vids, etc, from iTunes as well.

After fannying aroun with this all weekend Handbrake seems to work although you need something called DVD43 as well to free up the DVDs.

The only issue I have at the moment is using Handbrake to identify the the right files of the DVD. First one I tried was Star Trek and it worked except that all the running order was screwed up.

Never heard of DVD43. As for the running order? You should just be able to pick the film from the small list in the drop down box. Most will be a few seconds, as they are menu animations, etc. The main film should be in one block.

I followed a YouTube suggestion using both programs, the DVD43 might of course be unecessary, I'll try one later without it and see what happens, the films are taking about an hour to convert each at the moment, going into approximetly 400-500mb files so I should be able to get 10-15 films on my phone for the moment.

I think the Star Trek DVD is an odd case, as you said, all the other ones I've tried have one large file and it's straightforward to pick out. On the Trek DVD there are about 5 2hour files and all of them seem to run in different orders when I preview them, very odd. I'm wondering if it's some sort of anti-copying fiddle given it's my newest DVD.

Hanbrake is OK for free but if you want an easier to use, one-click, fast program that will convert your DVDs to iPhone without another program for decrypting first, then you can consider paying for a small utility like Nidesoft or Cucusoft (Nidesoft is currently on offer for £15).

Also don't forget BBC iPlayer, there is an option to download BBC programs for portable devices.
