I upgraded my father in laws pc to windows 7 and all went well. He has just called and some how it has rebooted and is now a media centre, with strange file extensions.

I have been told this over the phone and not seen it myself but it seems the pc frooze up and he switched it off. This caused it to go in to recovery mode and asked if he wanted to repair it. He said yes and this seems to be the result.

He now doesnt have MS office and cant access his work invoices.

Any ideas?

Is it a Dell with MediaDirect on it? If so, he's possibly pressing the wrong button to start it.. I know, I know, it sounds stupid, but my Mrs has managed this a few times on ours. The power button and the MediaDirect button are almost next to each other...

There is a setting in Media Centre that says, "Start Media Centre When Windows Starts" and he's ticked that option.

I would show you where exactly it is but I'm currently imaging my pc and all I can use at the moment is XP.

Sure someone will be along in a second smile

Ok.. if that's the problem, it's under Settings - General - Startup and Window Behaviour - Start Windows Media Centre when Windows starts.

If he's in Media Centre, just close it like any other Window (red x in the corner) after unchecking the above box.

OK, thanks. I tried to get him to do this over the phone last night, but it was just too painful. It seems he has saved a file, an .xls file, as some sort of media centre file and now it has changed all the files to media centre types and they won’t open in office. Also office has disappeared from the PC!

I dont know what the heck he has done, I will get to it this afternoon,

Thanks for all your assistance, if you think of anything else please let me know,

Sounds like he's just changed the default program.

Start menu - type default programs in search bar.

Sorted, thanks all.

It seems he recovered it back to last known good setting, which was just before I installed MS Office. So now his PC doesnt have office and he has been trying to open files with it defaulting to media centre,

Loading office now so I hope thats fixed it,

Thanks again,

Other than operator error I am impressed with W7. I might upgrade my office, as at the moment we are on XP and I wasn't impressed with vista.
