I have at my home office in Essex the above server running running Windows 2003 software. My partner in Kent has never been very happy with his connection to this server. The system was set up by a so called professional, but we have never been happy with its performance ie speed and ease of connection at the Kent end.

My partner in Kent has stopped using it now and we are back to transfering our files by memory stick! Are we running the right / wrong software or are we expecting too much?

Seconded.. but need more info on connection, and exactly what you're trying to run on it..

if he's on broadband he will only be able to upload at 256k

why not ditch the server and rent space on the interweb

Would it be quicker, easier to acess and above all simple?

much simpler than running your own server ( which im presuming ure patching, backing up etc...)

depends what your requirements are - if its just word processing etc have you looked at google docs as you can both collaborate on stuff in real time. If not theres loads of companies offering hosted services these days

Maybe even look at something really simple like an MSN logon with SkyDrive.. free and 25Gb storage.. depending on your requirements. This can be shared out with specific users, so is just as secure.

And cheaper. Some servers are quite power hungry.
