I spend a lot of time on the phone to the states on various conference calls. My trusty Southern Bell portable analogue home phone is getting a bit tired, but it has one feature I can't find on any other portable home phone - a MUTE button. This kills my mic and means I can listen/use the toilet/cook tea/watch telly with sound on while on a boring call.

I cannot find a new phone with this feature. What they all call Hold/Secrecy or Mute plays some kind of music/sound. Not good in a conference call situation.

Does anyone know of a portable phone (or maybe handfree at least) with this feature? It can be analogue or digital.

Thanks.

You could try one of these, has a secrecy facility but not sure if it plays a tune

we've got BT Studio DECT phones..
Internal calls (great for the lazy!), and mute..

Call quality is spot on as well..

I use a Binatone MD-1000 DECT cordless phone in exactly the same way as you do; mute just makes it quiet, no music or anything! Battery is good for a two hour long conference as well. I also have an earpiece for it, so I am hands free and can read Pistonheads if it's a boring conference.

!! I've heard that some mute buttons aren't what you think - they only cut the conversation one way - which could get very embarassing! Can anyone confirm this?

I thought that's how they were supposed to work. The person on the other end can't hear you. That way you can hear them unless they press Mute too.

When you need a pee, stick the phone down the side of the sofa?
