usb drive not recognised?
Discussion
My computer no longer seems to let me see this when I plug it in. It has xp professional on it, and it has worked before. It is still charging through the usb cable, and it comes up on the list of things you can "safely remove" when plugged in, but when you click on "my computer" there is no trace at all of it, so I can't put things on it or take things off it. Tried it on a friend's computer with the same cable and it is fine, and like I say, it used to work, so is there anyway I can make the computer work a little harder at working out what I plugged into it?

nope.
Have just taken the micro sd card out of the device (a micro DV camcorder, but it works as a USB drive too), plugged it into one of those card reader things, and that works. So for some reason it is not working when the camera is plugged in, even though it does work like that when connected to a different computer. It doesn't need a driver or anything so something is creating a conflict in my machine. It hasn't worked since I connected up a Maxtor external drive through the USB, not sure if that has anything to do with it. The USBs are working generally

I had a similar problem (but with vista) recently.
Does it acknowledge other things in the USB ports?
If not, it will likely be case of the latest WIndows update f
king it all up.
I fixed mine (after trying approximately 10 million things) by simply reinstalling the last windows update.

Is there an option on the device to make it act as a mass storage device when connected via USB? Windoze might otherwise be trying to use it as a webcam or something...
it can also work as a USB webcam, so it could be that, but there is no way of switching anything - it just works on other machines but not this one. The USB ports are fine, they even read the same micro SD card when it was inserted into a card reader and shoved into a usb port, it just won't read it when installed in the camcorder. The system recognises its a USB mass storage device because that what pops up when it is under "My computer" and "manage" and also under the "safely remove hardware" icon. I just want a window to appear in desktop so that I can view the content and delete it.Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
