I was thinking about formatting my G4 iBook and when I checked the box, I have lost my original OSX discs. Anyone got any ideas as to where I can replace them without going the Apple route?

Ebay obviously, although, you don't really need to reformat.
Just set up a new User account, with Admin rights, and log into it.
Delete the original Account (you've backed up whatever files you need first, haven't you?) and any 3rd party Apps.
Secure Erase the Trash, and that's about as much as you need doing.
Run Disk Utility to make sure the directory is fine - Verify Disk, and Repair Permissions.

Anything more, then check macupdate or versiontracker for 3rd party "free space" erasing Apps, with multiple overwrites (7 is US DoD)

If you do buy from ebay make sure it's a full install retail version disk (they have a big X on the disk) and not a grey disk. Grey disks are Mac model specific and generally won't install on anything other than the machine they came with.

I've got every version (retail) since the beginning. Email me if you have no luck through other sources, and I'll burn you a worm.

Remember that whilst OS X is secure and pretty much virus-free, the only well-known exploits on OS X involve trojans, i.e. stuff you install yourself thinking it's clean code. A downloaded torrent of, say, Leopard, may include malware. Certainly the popular cracked version of Adobe Creative Suite for OS X that was floating round the torrent sites a while back contained a trojan.

Of course, a disc I send you could also have a rootkit in it, but I'd imagine you'd trust me more than a random torrent on the internet smile

Not only do I have all the retail discs for every version of OS X since Cheetah, I've also got many model-specific install discs since I've owned a silly number of Mac models. I don't tend to buy the 'consumer' kit (iMac, for example) so I don't have those, but Powermac / Powerbook / Macbook Pro / Macbook Air / etc. all available. The retail discs are all serial-free though, so I'm happy sending one out.

The only version that costs proper money is OS X Server, which is around £400 a licence and I won't give *that* away because Apple invalidate the serial if it pops up from more than one MAC address... wink

A mate put OSX on a Dell Netbook, another story, and reckons he bought the Snow Leopard upgrade disc which costs £29, and he says it has the whole OS on it not just the upgrade bit.

I have seen the netbook working so he must be right.

True, it's a full install disk but Snow Leopard will only install on Intel Macs and the OP has a G4 which is a PowerPC.

Thanks people. I suppose I'm being picky, but I have OCD regarding my computers, so wasn't happy when I realised my original OSX discs had gone. I had refurb'd a G3 iBook for the missus (new hd and dc in board), so either that, or recent house move has caused me to lose said discs.
