Hi all,

Just wondering if any of you PHer's know of a suitable solution and could perhaps point me in the right direction.

I'm aiming on producing a searchable content DVD, which holds information that's currently all in my head. I have specialist knowledge and I'm looking to be able to offer my knowledge to a known user group that exists in the UK (I've done my research there)

I'd like to be able to protect it, so that multiple copies can't just be made by someone else who then sets up and undercuts me.

I'm aiming to retail the DVD for around £30.

I'm thinking along the lines of some sort of automated system which creates a code upon purchase of the disk and is emailed to them and is specific to their name and details. The content would be held in a searchable type setup and displayed on their monitors with the option to print. When the information is printed, the output will be watermarked/stamped with my company name on it, or, I was thinking perhaps I can tailor the content so that it picks up their actual name when registering, and inserts it into the text so it becomes personalised to them. Example "Paul, you must next select X dialog box and then click on the options tab".

The last 'personalisation' idea I just had earlier today - it may well be a total non starter. I basically just want to protect the knowledge so that users can't just 'easily' copy and re-distribute.

Any ideas or products that I could go for please?

Cheers, in advance !

Secured and watermarked PDF files, simple solution that may slow down or deter the casual 'thief', and if you change the watermark for each customer traceable back to the culprit.

The secured website approach will be your best bet though.

You could have a look at the BSI website. Whilst I don't use it I know they have some sort of system where you order/download their documents online and somehow it is tied to the machine you download it on.

Keep one thing in mind though, if you can display it on screen or print it out, it's possible for someone to copy it if they really want to.

The data on the DVD, what format is it in? (e.g. PDF, Word Document, HTML, something proprietary, etc.)

You've not included enough information in your post to give a definite answer but feel free to PM me as I have some experience in this field.
