I have recently purchased a Canon HD camcorder, it uses .mts files. My Macbook doesn't recognise the files. The files just show as being blank. I have downloaded various apps i.e. Popcorn etc, which I have payed for. These are good, but don't allow me to see what each video file is just by opening their folder (in the same way you can see/preview .mov files). Also imovie doesn't like .mts files either and I would like to be able to use it. Is there a codec I can download to allow these files to be used/viewed within Snow leopard with minimum fuss?

Thanks in advance.

MTS is an 'MPEG Transport Stream' which basically means Canon have wrapped an AVC file in a proprietary MTS 'wrapper'.

If this is the case, then VoltaicHD or MPEG Streamclip should let you extract the AVC file from the wrapper without having to transcode/convert (and lose quality) the file at all.

Whether either of them will work on all MTS files is down to how the MTS file has been contructed by the camera - some work, some don't.

Depending on which camera you've got, you may still be able to import video directly from your camera into iMovie like this:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/#overlay-organiz...

The official iMovie camera compatibility list is here:

Thankyou.

The camera is a Canon HF200. Seems really complex to just view your video's. I have just bought a dedicated DVD writer for the time being.

That camera should work fine with iMovie, but you'll need to follow the instructions in the video:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/#overlay-organiz...

Don't just try to copy the .mts files into iMovie - you need to import the video directly into iMovie from the camera. Once you've imported the video into iMovie you can browse through it, create projects, export it to other formats etc.
