Hi All.

As part of my support business, I host a number of domains as part of the overall package offered to customers. We don't claim that to be the main thrust of the business but it's very handy & probably something I want to grow.

I inherited a Fasthosts reseller account some years ago when I took over a job lot of hosted domains. I've always been reluctant to switch due to the hassle factor but FH's poor support, high prices & poor offerings (only 5 MySQL databases for example included in the cost but plenty of people need them now for ecommerce/Wordpress etc) mean that I'm going to bite the bullet soon.

Migrating 40+ domains will be a real hassle but probably worth it in the long run. Some of them have SQL databases too which I can see being a headache but anyway...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a hosting provider that runs a reseller package and hopefully includes unlimited MySQL and extras such as pre-installed Wordpress/Magento/Cubecart etc.

HeartInternet has been suggested, anyone used them?

I know we have our very own register1 but I don't think they do a reseller type package & I don't want the time overheads of running our own server, virtual or otherwise.

Thanks.

I was going to go with Eleven2 for reselling hosting a while ago but ended up not pursuing it as I tried a standard account to test the water and their support was woeful - took them 3 days to respond to a ticket.. I'm now with dreamhost, who don't do reselling but that's not an issue as I find it easier in the long run to manage clients hosting myself (without them fiddling!). I used to be with pipeten and they were excellent but expensive, with limited mySql db's & space.

That's not much help regarding your question though, sorry! smile

A lot of hosts running cPanel have the option to transfer existing sites over automatically so that could be useful for you though.

It would but Fasthosts don't use cPanel on their standard reseller package (it might be on the dedicateds but given the problems everyone has with FH, there's no way I'd bother with a dedicated server from these muppets)

I'll risk the wrath of Jamie!

My hosting is through QIQ who are are a reseller for Heart - as far as I know.

I have had no problems, if I had I'd be moving to Reg in a flash.

No sure about SQL (way above my level) but they do have a lot of easy to install stuff.
If you want to have a look and their info page is not good enough PM me.
They do have an affiliate (sp) thingy but I've never bothered to set it up!

I have used fast2host before for reselling and they have been fantastic in their support, always get through to someone (in England.. actually about 20 miles from me). I even went to their offices for them to take me through how to set everything up (I was completely new to hosting etc).

I am a web developer and a couple of years back I decided to consolidate all my hosted client sites into a single reseller account, to both increase my margin and to make it a heck of a lot easier to manage.

Rather than getting a regular vanilla "reseller account", I strongly recommend a cPanel/WHM-based VPS. A VPS is basically a virtualised server with its own dedicated allocation of RAM and system resources. A physical server can have a few VPSes, but they are all virtualised, so from your point of view, you are basically running your own dedicated box.

The benefits are that you get full control of your package (YOU set the limits and account packages and YOU decide what software or what version of whatever you want to run). All of mine have unlimited everything (domains, subdomains, databases, e-mail addresses etc). I run a Squid proxy off the server as well, have two fixed IP addresses as part of the deal, and have happily installed software on the machine that regular web hosts would object to.

I strongly recommend Future Hosting for this:

http://www.futurehosting.com/virtual-servers/cpane...

You can take out a VPS in London if you want it to remain in the UK. Also, with this fantastic offer they have detailed on this thread...

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=932...

...you get 1TB of bandwidth, 20GB space and 768MB RAM in a managed (meaning they offer full support) cPanel package for USD35 a month.

By the way, I know you will find lots of reseller packages with "unlimited" space and "unlimited" bandwidth, but this is all a lie. At least with a stated limit, you know what you are paying for.

If you were running a single small site, a VPS would of course be overkill. But for multiple sites under a single account, it is a Godsend and the math makes absolute sense.

Hope this helps.

PS - Regular disclaimer of I-am-not-affiliated-with-them-just-a-very-happy-customer applies.

Oddly enough, I asked Register1 the same question the other week, because I have a few domains and want to host against each. Pretty soon, it will be cheaper to use reseller hosting rather than buy hosting separately for each domain.

To be fair, they did say you can forward domains to subdomains of another domain for hosting. This would work well for small, non-commercial sites maybe. However, I think this will hurt SEO pretty badly.

For now I'll stay with Register1 and hope by the time it becomes cost effective to use reseller hosting, that they offer something similar.

Alas we wont offer Reseller hosting.. it goes against everything we stand for, in that it allows other people to trade on our reputation, but not be bound to offer the levels of service and support that help make our reputation.. ultimately allowing the brand to be tarnished by the very resellers we'd sell to.

We allow customers to rent Dedicated servers with the same software on that we use for the VDS's which we can still patch for them, I believe this is the perfect progression from several of your own VDS's.

I can see the logic in that Jamie. It does make sense to protect your brand - particularly as your customer service is second to none and Register1 has a good rep - exactly why I moved from a company that was useless for support and had dodgy uptime.

I think, for my needs at least, the dedicated server will be a bit overkill on spec and cost. I just play around with affiliate marketing and nothing that complicated at the moment. When the time comes (not there yet), I'll need to find a cost effective way to host against a number of domains so it doesn't cost me any more to experiment with a new project (other than the cost of a url). So if you ever decide to offer a service which allows you to have one hosting package to serve several domains (not forwarding to subdomains), be sure to let us know.

I guess that wouldn't need to be "reseller" hosting as such, although apart from getting people to agree to your T's & C's not sure how you'd police it.

I'll be sticking to Register1 for the time being anyway and will cross that bridge when I come to it... or when my sites start making me enough money smile

Cheers
James
