Reg1 Users, problems??
Discussion
Anyone else experiencing email problems? Both our sites were down this morning but then came back up, this happened again a short while ago.
Now emails seem to take anything from 10 mins to half an hour to come through??(i'll get a reponse to one of their tckets but the email telling me about it will come through 30 mins later, the time on the email is also 30 mins ago!) Anyone else having issues, BT is the BB supplier btw just in case it is local to them??
Sometimes get this:-
Task '******************** - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'
Internet is otherwise working fine.
Thanks

Hmm, slighty disappointed in this reply......
"As with all shared services there will be times where it is quicker than others due to the varying load, but at no point was your site unavailable.
If your site requires a consistent fast response then you may be interested in our dedicated servers, available from £49 per month. Click the link at the top for more information."
Varying load i can accept, emails coming through 30-40 minutes after they are sent due to this i can not, not to mention the site disappearing twice today but apparently not! (even when other websites can be accessed just fine which suggest our connection is not at fault).

For one of the delayed emails (assuming you are using Outlook), right click, select message options then copy the internet header and paste it here - at least as far as all the "Received" headers.
Obviously you'll want to redact any email addresses!
This will allow me (or some other kind soul) to see where the 40 minute delay is occuring, which might be useful in diagnosing the problem.

Dave,
Drop me an email with your VDS names and I'll look into this, one of the 4 VDS Servers has become increasingly loaded over the last few months, despite no new sites being added to it for the last 14+ months.. we've already implemented a migration of some of the heavy resource usage accounts of that box about 5 months back, but it appears other sites have simply got busier in their place.. we're reimplementing the same strategy of moving them off now, but I'll see if we can have your site moved off along with it..
Unfortunately its a downside of providing excellent hosting, the customers who take it grow bigger and bigger and in some instances out-grow the nature of virtual hosting and need to be assisted in upgrading
This server loading is only affecting about 15% of VDS customers, and should be greatly improved over the coming week.

Why on earth would you put a business earning you money on shared hosting? Once you generate an income move to one of Jamies Dedicated offerings.
Unfortunately, whilst this should be the case, it seems as the offering works so well for people, they arent as incentivised to move on to a more appropriate level of hosting as they could be..The VDS's are a great middle ground step, above that of typical shared hosting, but crucially well below that of a Dedicated hosting solution..
We offer a clear upgrade progression from VDS to Dedicated, allowing the porting of your VDS to your own Dedi seamlessly.. it's just not always easy to convince people that its their time to make the upgrade... that said we have moved dozens over in our time.
The above said, its still our job and duty to keep the VDS servers operating as peak efficiency, and even though this server hasnt had any new accounts in 14+ months, the accounts on it are continuing to become busier, which is having a knock on effect..
We've been taking steps to address this, it just seems this morning was one of those busier than usual days for some sites on the server, which had a knock on effect to other sites.
I'm not a fan of kicking people off when they use more than their fair share, preferring to give customers the benefit of the doubt in terms of slashdot effects, but ultimately steps are sometimes needed for those clients who continually take more than their fair share (not saying that relates to anyone in this thread!)
Ultimatly though, if you want the best performance at all times, Dedicated is the only way you can be the master of your own destiny.

J, thanks for dropping in, we are being moved to a new server tonight Drop me an email with your VDS names and I'll look into this, one of the 4 VDS Servers has become increasingly loaded over the last few months, despite no new sites being added to it for the last 14+ months.. we've already implemented a migration of some of the heavy resource usage accounts of that box about 5 months back, but it appears other sites have simply got busier in their place.. we're reimplementing the same strategy of moving them off now, but I'll see if we can have your site moved off along with it..

You do realise there are many many businesses on shared severs i am sure
It's generating an income but when i look at the VDS re:the amount of bandwidth we are using why change to dedicated? Seems overkill to me. It's not like we get millions of hits a week! The site disappearing only happened this week9well today to be exact), email slow down has been an issue for around 2 months i'd say. Looking at site traffic data hits per day etc have been pretty constant for the last 12 months which to me, suggests the issue isn't us? happy to be corrected

Also, constant traffic doesnt mean you havent been constantly over the thresholds, but slack was available to cover you either

Ultimately only the customer knows just how important having always up performance is to them... there is a reason VDS's are cheap and Dedicated servers cost more
