Anyone care to comment before I splash out hundreds of dollars on one?

Might get the mini-iPod though and flash it around before its available over here

Less than they advertised. Battery life is rapidly diminished at higher volumes and if you keep swapping tracks/albums etc (4 hours no problem though).

Make sure you get the correct leads to connect to your PC/mac. When I got my ipod it stayed in the box for 2 weeks before the right leads turned up in the post.

My iPod's over a year old and the battery is as good as ever.

The quoted time is 'best case' though - just like a laptop computer. Doing lots of navigation will reduce it as the hard drive will need to spin up to access your music - in normal play it only needs to do that every 20 minutes or so.

Edited to add - of course the early iPod's do 12 hours, not 8

I get around 6 hours sticking it on random and letting it run. It's been the same for the past year and hasn't dropped off yet.

Did anyone here in the States that peolple were sueing Apple as the actual battery life didn't match the stated battery life.

Once upon a time people used to phone customer services to complain, now they sue them instead FFS!

If you're looking for more info on the ipod then there's no better place to get it than

www.ipodlounge.com/

..and I get about 8 hours on continuous random on my 40gb ipod. (I tested it
Normally though I charge it every night and listen to it on the motorbike (via an autocomm system) on the way to/from work which is an hour each way.
Love it to bits, much better than the Archos I'd previously been using.
