Any SPSS Gurus?

I'm using SPSS to collate data from a clinical trial. I'm currently in the process of creating the data columns but don't understand what the "missing data" bit is for. I've searched everywhere and just don't get it. Someone had started it off for me and they've put some down as "-888,-999" and some as "none".
