I have a Linkstation Live (LS-CHL) 1GB which I use as a NAS and the plan was always to add an external hard disk to do backups of this once or twice a week.

Does anybody have any experience of this?

I was going to buy a normal USB external hard disk, link it up to the port on the LS and do backups from there. Is this the best way? Reading the manual it looks very complicated choosing the correct backup options.

I have also read than it needs to be formatted "ext3" - this presumably will mean that I can't just plug in the USB drive to the PC to restore stuff (for example, if the LS dies) which could be a pain.

Can I use a non ext3 filesystem? Or can I buy an ext3 "reader" for Windows? Or would I be better off using a CD bootable Linux distro to copy everything over to an NTFS drive?

I could backup over the network but it will be slower and mean that a PC needs to be on...

I want to get it sorted in my head before I order another USB hard drive.
