Lousy Orange signal...

Has anyone tried using one of the third party signal boosters in poor coverage areas?
I'm toying with MR Mini Personal Repeater click or the Orange specific MR Mini GSM 1800 click.
Do they work? (There is a weak signal to be had from the first floor.)
Any others worth considering?
If it's relevent, to suit an iPhone 3GS so UMA not an option.
