Does anyone have any clues as to why my PC is so slow? I've de bugged it with Avast and Malaware, defragged and cleaned the disk

What does it actually do during that time?

Does the hard drive chug away? Does the CPU usage increase (Task Manager)?

Uninstall all the extra toolbars, eg google etc. Clear all the web cache.

Run MSconfig and see what is loading in the background and stop anything that you are not familiar with.

What's set as your home page? Try changing it to about: blank and see if that speeds things up at all...

Do you have many browser plug ins (Google tool bar, etc)? You could try disabling these as well to see if it makes a difference.

Control Panel > Internet Options and delete the history/cache.

If you still have problems, from the Advanced menu of the same screen choose Reset to reset your IE settings, although you will loose certain settings you may have configured.

If that fails, re-install IE 8 from here:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/8/8/F88F0...

If that fails, do the right thing and install Firefox or Google Chrome wink

If IE 8 run ie with no addins, under all programs/accessories/system tools

see if it goes away. If it does, then you need to manage your add-ins.

Hi there,

Over time, Windows slows down as it accumulates more and more within the registry. Use of registry cleaners, cashe emptiers and switching off features etc will help prolong usage of course, but there comes a time when you should just bite the bullet and perform a fresh re-install of windows. You will get your responsiveness right back!

How often? well how long is a piece of string? - I tend to do the above 2 times a year. I'm a heavy user and I just like knowing my machines are running quick and responsive always. I do this even if I don't see a reduction in performance and responsiveness.

Back everything you need up, dig out your re-install disk and perform the re-install and then restore you files and programs and then feel much better and have no frustrations when using your computer!

If it's 'just' the browser thats slow and everything else is fine, perhaps try a re-install of just the browser itself?

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!
