MS XP 'Recommended' Updates

I download all the critical updates but should I bother with the recommended ones?

I don't do this unless it looks like I might need them.

Nah, only get the critical ones, I've lost count of the number of times "recommended" updates have screwed up my system. You need to be very selective.

I do - Critical implies a serious problem and MS won't want to admit to too many more of those!

I suspect they downgrade stuff to reccommended on the basis that as long as it is just possible to use the related SW without the update, it's nowhere near as good as it should/could be.

Some of the recommended updates are really useful; for example the updates to Movie Maker last year sometime actually added enough functionality to make movies !!
