Was just on the verge of buying an iPod Touch but with the announcement of the new OS, should I wait, or will it be a simple software upgrade at the time..? Can't seem to determine if there will be a simultaneous hardware upgrade when the OS is released...

Any Apple guru's care to speculate on this likelihood..?

The upgrade won't be till Autumn or so I've read, And will be a simple software upgrade anyway I should imagine. Itunes will prompt you to download it when it is available as always.

I read somewhere this morning that ipod touch devices manufactured from late 2009 onwards will support OS 4.0, so you should be fine as long as you're buying new.

iPod's will have a charge for the upgrade - typically about $10-$15 from what I remember. iPhone updates are free due to revenue recognition rules IIRC. So if you are happy then go for it, its not going to break the bank. But if you would prefer to wait then fine, late summer I guess will have OS 4.0 as standard.

Check on the Apple website for compatibility though - just to make sure that you buy the correct model that supports it when it comes out.

from what I've read about v4.0 you don't want it anyway, turns the bloody thing in to an adserver.

Methinks apple have screwed up big time with this.

Im sure any existing units will be upgradable, so I wouldn't hold back on buying if its what you want.

I'd be quite happy with the 3rd version out now, BUT when I bought my MBP I only had it a couple of months before they revamped them with the Duo2 chipset - I felt a bit duped since one of the benefits of previous Apple units was that they didn't gazump in the manner of "other" computers. irked Was trying to gauge likelihood of them doing something similar when the new software gets released - decent opportunity for it I should imagine.

iPhones usually get upgraded in June/July, iPods in September. The OS4 will probably cost £5-10 to upgrade an iPod touch.

Nah, its just better tools for adding advertising to apps. Loads of other companies offer the same thing, and apple want a slice. I imagine it'll be the same as now - free apps have advertising, paid ones don't and if the adds are too much the app will get bad reviews.

Dammit - it has just occurred to me that can buy a factory unlocked iPhone here in Australia - legitimately from Apple. That would do all that the iTouch can do and could just use my standard PAYG sim ( don't use mobile internet - just interested in the WiFi). Only trouble is that it is double the cost of the iTouch. Tempted but is it necessary...?

Why cripple yourself by not using the mobile data functionality? The Touch has wifi, so if you're absolutely sure you won't use the data, why bother?
