Moving house in next few weeks so just sizing up broadband (and poss tv and phone) packages.

Currently have Virgin Media TV + phone + Broadband package. Its been ok other than a couple of short term problems but the phone gets used for incoming calls only and we only seem to watch TV channels that we could get on freeview anyway so, though I'd be happy to stay with them, I feel there may be more cost effective options out there.

But what is getting on my nerves is that it appears that with any other broadband supplier, we'd have to take a BT line at £11.59 per month as well. This seems excessive for something that barely gets used and also pushes the overall broadband/phone package up into the realms of Virgin's TV packages which appear better value.

Any alternatives?

I see that a company called Primus offer a slightly cheaper landline at £8.99 per month and o2 can do Broadband at £7.50 per month. That seems to be the most cost effective route I've found so far. Anything better out there?

Like yourelf we have no need for a telephone line or watch any other channels that we get on freeview, Virgin do a package where you just get the internet, no phone line needed so you dont need too give BT any money for something you dont need!

It all comes through there standard box on the wall as per there tv i think? They supply a wireless router and connect with a cable out of the box into the router very simple.

Ours is £20 a month I think and very quick internet speeds, has been completley reliable, no problems at all.

I wish the law could be altered so that you do not have to pay for a voice connection in order to get broadband - I hate having to to pay for the connection just to be able to receive ADSL.

It would be nice to not have to pay line rental, But who would maintain the copper if it went faulty?

yeah, but they should introduce a "data only" product, I think.

Yep. Don't care about the bundle of free calls. Just want to be able to receive calls and get adsl. That's it!

there is a data only product via updata infrastructure ,mainly if not solely used by schools it's a complete nightmare for engineers as when not in use there are no conditions i.e voltage or dialtone on the line so the pairs of wires are always being taken for other circuits without knowing they are are working circuits ! and as stated above somebody needs to be paid to maintain the network some of which is over 50 yrs old .

A few ISPs do a package which includes the cost of line rental. Plusnet, Talk Talk and some others I believe.

VM will sell you a stand alone Broadband line, but it costs more than getting a package confused

Orange do as well, and discount it if you have an Orange mobile.

Stick with Virgin, they are one of the best BB providers.

Are you very, very sure? When I moved house, my initial move was to call BT to have the line switched on again (there's a cable running from the top of the telegraph pole to my house). They said that the house has never had a connection so I'd have to pay £x00 to have it connected. Decided to go with NTL (who were then bought by Virgin) who had a cable connected to the box on the front wall ie free reconnection. So I have no dealings with BT at all, who scare me as they appear to have no clue.

Its funny the house that we're moving to, I think, has a BT line (disconnected), a Sky Digital dish and wiring and a Virgin Media Cable installation so the choice is ours. We have a freesat box and freeview box that we bought for the tennants that were there so TV isn't really an issue. I'm just annoyed at the fact I have to pay for BT line rental if I want anything other than Virgin for my ISP. If they offered a stripped to the bone £5 per month line rental only deal, I'd be happy, but because they seem to have a captive market they offer a £11.50 per month deal that includes loads of free calls that nobody really wants.

Not that I'm bitter you understand!

Anyway, as a resolution to this thread I think we're probably going to stay with Virgin. Their Customer Service certainly leaves something to be desired but, for us at least, they seem the best of a bad bunch in terms of overall package.
