MKV File Convertor
Discussion
Does anyone know if there's a free program out there to convert videos from MKV format to something like mpg or avi so I can burn it to a DVD?
One of my mates asked me to burn a couple of videos on to a dvd for him, when he dropped them off on a memory stick they're mkv format, one I haven't encountered before, although windows media player can play them, without downloading extra codecs, but Windows DVD Maker won't load them.

Don't know of a single app that will do it for free, but

guides you through using a number of freeware apps that will get the file in to mp4 format for you.

For future reference, I tried SUPER last night and it will convert to and from mkv
It's not the best of interfaces to use, but it works, although Windows DVD Maker still doesn't like the newly converted file, but I think that's more to do with me picking a codec that it doesn't like
Will have another go tonight - of course this would be so much quicker and easier if DVD maker would tell you what codecs it likes!

The PS3 mob use mkv2vob...

...Not sure if the VOBs it produces work on standalone DVD players, as they don't usually work on PCs once they've been converted...

Winff.org (Winff) is a very comprehensive free converter. Also http://www.dvdflick.net/ is a free DVD compilation and burning tool that will convert a lot of file formats and let you stick a menu system on it.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I did have another go with super last night, but as I was running it in the background whilst doing other things I managed to overload the processor and it gave up with an error right near the end of the conversion
Will have a look at the others and this time leave it alone to get on with converting.

WWW.doom9.org tends to be worth a look for this kind of thing.
