Vodafone 500meg Data allowance on HTC Desire?

Need a little advice here, as i'm not very clued up on this, giving my company phone back after a change in roles so I need to get my own phone for the first time in a number of years!
I'm pretty set on the above, but i'm concerned about the 500meg limit that Vodafone put on the account? In reality is that restrictive in any way? I would only use it in work for viewing emails, maybe browsing a few sites, using google maps etc, no streaming though. At home I would just connect to the wifi.
My concern is I don't want to have to 'worry' about going over the top, as they are fairly hefty charges, unless I tether it (whatever that means).
I hear the supposed o2/iPhone unlimited data contracts are limited to 250meg in reality anyway? My Mrs has one and has never heard anything despite using it a fair bit, if thats the case I think I should be safe, just after a bit of reassurance really
