So, the other halfs 'kids' (they're in their late 20's but they're still her kids) are currently living in Bolivia and they dont have internet access. So they have diverted their skype calls to their mobile and we can call them for free....Talking tonight with her son who is half way up a mountain looking at condors for nowt!....How cool is that?

Won't cost you anything, but surely their Skype account will be charging them a fortune??

Not if it's Skype to Skype and you have free internet on your Mobile and home PC .. Otherwise it will cost you your data tarriff on the mobile and your ISP fee at home. The home one 99.9% will be paying anyway!

Yup - their skype accounts will be charged the "skype-out" rate to a mobile in Bolivia.

Nope, seems it's free both ends...we made the call (free call) , they don't have any Skype credit anyway. They just diverted their skype calls to their mobile! Maybe I shouldnt be telling you this! wink

As per the Skype website:

Forward calls when you're offline

Forward calls from Skype to your landline or mobile and never miss a call. Calls forwarded to a landline or mobile are charged at standard rates. http://go.skype.com/rates

Hmmm - I use skype as my primary means of telephony and whenever I call a mobile, forwarded or not, it costs me skype credit.

I wonder if your sons have given skype their CC numbers and ticked "auto-top-up" or what ever it is called. If so, they might have a bit of a shock when they next get a CC bill....

It'll charge the standard data rate for the mobile to the mobile bill.

I've used Skype regularly for 5+ years, and I don't think skype will be charging them, it'll be the roaming charge from their mobile phone carrier for roaming in Bolivia. Unless they're on this vodafone passport deal thing which I understand makes roaming reasonable in certain countries.

Skype will not charge them, BUT the mobile company will charge for the call at the other end.

I don't think it will charge the 'caller' for a call that is forwarded on the other end. It will charge the recipient, I think.

You can have internet skype on mobiles using their internet access & hence free calls these days. I've got it on mine.
The question here is 'how much will the mobile bill be charged for data useage while accessing the internet for this call'.

Roaming GSM data is still, by and large, ruinously expensive. I'd be pretty shocked to hear that *Bolivia* is one of the cheapest countries in this respect, too.

The 'reasonable' Vodafone offer is £50 for 50 MB flat rate, across Europe AFAIK. Above that and it starts getting silly. A couple of years ago, I got charged £680 for one week on a Greek island, with only GPRS on offer and only one bar of reception on my iPhone... exactly *how* much data it could have downloaded in the best possible circumstances would have been limited by the technology, yet I still got a preposterous bill. It wasn't Vodafone, it was how much the local provider could charge Vodafone roaming clients. I think the island only had one mobile network provider, so they had everyone by the balls anyway...

Skype to skype ... No matter what it's installed on, i have it on my phone, my laptop and my home pc will only cost DATA, no skype out, no call forwarding ... It's just like MSN (or windows live) messenger on your phone but it's voice sent over the internet not text!!

We all agree that. I suggest you reread the OP's post again wink

They have diverted their skype calls to mobiles. Whether they are local mobiles, roaming mobiles etc, it makes no odds: skype will be charging them skype-out rates. In fact, if they are using roaming mobiles, then the picture is worse: they will be charged skype out rates AND the cost of the roaming call to receive it!

If they are taking skype calls using data, then again if using a local mobile, there will be a data plan or cost to take in to account. If they are using a roaming mobile for data then I hope they have got the vaseline handy.

GlenMH is the only person who is clued up it seems.

If you forward a skype call to UK mobile in the UK you will pay skype-out rate.

If you forward a skype call to a UK mobile whilst roaming you will be paying skype-out AND be charged to receive the call on your mobile (roaming receive fee)

If it was FREE for all... then why would anyone bother to use roaming. You could just fabricate free calls here there and everywhere through skype forwarding.

IMHO the cheapest way to talk would be to get a local sim card, then use a UK calling card from here smile
