hoping someone can guide me in the right direction here! I have switched on my pc, and it is stuck on detecting ide drives whatever that is, will not go any further. Any ideas? Posting this from my mobile hence the title cock up

Something is wrong with your Hard drive. Open the PC up, check all the physical connections - go into the bios (after turning on the computer hit F2 or del - which ever one says SET-UP) . Get the bios to "auto-detect" the hard drive (commonly called the "c:" drive on Microsoft OS). If this fails it could either be the drive or the mother board.
