Broadband headache

Hello all,
My wife and I are moving house later this week and are retaining our telephone number. I called O2 today to advise them and they have said that it will take ten to fourteen days to reconnect us. Apparently, it would be quicker if we had a new number. Christ knows why...
Anyway, I don't particularly want to be without the internet for up to two weeks, particularly as my wife is job hunting at the moment, so my question is which broadband provider, in your experience, will get me up and running the quickest? Obviously they have to be a good provider too.
We don't have Sky or any other satellite TV, incidentally.
