Managed to drop my iPhone 3GS at lunchtime...

There's about a 1mm gap in the casing near the bottom, and the silence switch on the top left has been pushing in so it's flush with the phone.

It's not insured, does anyone know how much the Apple store charge to fix stuff like this?

Thanks!

I did the same and luckily it was still under warranty. I went into my local Carphone Warehouse for repair and they gave me a new one.

Warranty? Mines under warranty but it's hardly a warranty claim is it?

You'd be surpised take it back to the apple shop or wherever and let them have alook at it.

You might get lucky.

Most of those parts can be replaced quite easily.

Use a precision screw driver to remove the two screws each side of the dock connector. Then get some sort of sucker and attach it to the screen near the home button. Pull on this and the whole screen will come away, be careful though as it is connected at the top end.

These guys will sell any parts you need www.parts4ipods.com (no link to me, I've used them before to buy replacement glass though.)

Search youtube for videos showing how to take it apart (search for replacing iPhone screen)

You'll probably find it still works ok and a case may stop reminding you about the gap, but an Apple store will swap it for a new one at a discounted charge.

My wife and I have dropped / left on a bench / dunked / etc... 5 of them now.

For some reason a Nexus One refuses to succumb to the same fate. Spooky! nuts

Yeah it works fine, I just wanted to sell it when the new one comes out.

I took the Incase Slider off of it last month as well, ouch.

Its it not covered by your house insurance, if you "dropped it in your house" or you maybe covered by your bank account additional policies...

Take it into Apple and you'll be surprised at how accommodating they can be. After all, what you got to lose?

Put it out of it's misery and buy a real phone.

Yes, I hated my iPhone. Upgraded to a Nokia X6.

Yep. OK it's not built as well as the iPhone, but it's nice being able to get 3G signal (3.5G at work, iPhone couldn't get 3G at all), the battery lasts 3-4 days instead of a day on the iPhone, and the bluetooth works properly on the X6 too.

No regrets at all.
