I thought a couple of years ago there was some public watchdog drama about the exorbitant price of roaming charges, and all the mobile phone companies dropped their prices?

I thought it had dropped to 40p a minute last time I checked?

Well, last week I used my mobile in the USA and got a text telling me it was going to cost me £1.20 a minute to make or receive phone calls. So, did they all just say 'fvck you' and charge what the hell they like??? rage

Indeed. ROW is still charge what they can get away with.

For instance next week I'm in Kenya

Receive a call £1.00 plus VAT per min.
Make a call £1.40 plus VAT per min.

Data charges for upto 5Mb per 24 hours on your phone £15.99 per 24 hours
Data charges for upto 5Mb per 24 hours on my netbook £29.99 per 24 hours yikes

Paid a fiver this summer for a three minute call to the U.K from Nigeria with O2. So it can be pretty steep.

Yep. Price reductions were for European countries only - think the European courts ruled that prices could only reflect true costs of the local provider and the increased admin cost of billing, rather than blatant profiteering.

I recently ended up in hospital in Vancouver for a week after a snowboarding mishap, which meant lots of calls to the insurance company and receiving calls from worries friends and relatives. Just come home to £400
of roaming charges (and I was even trying to use the phone sparingly). What really got me was the £6 per megabyte charge for data - absolute rip off, although luckily ai found a wireless hotspot on the second day which kept the cost down. Will be buying a local PAYG sim the next time I'm in North America and leave my UK phone switched off.

I shall phone T Mobile this week and ask how the hell they justify hiking the price 300%, as I am sure it was 40p a minute last time I read the e mail they send when you log your phone on.

On Thursday/Friday I received seven such emails, as I flew back from the USA via Amsterdam, I can only assume they'd bill me 40p for each if I had opened them?

Or do I get stung regardless?

And all this bks about volcanic ash, makes me wonder what was the real scam. Both planes I took had 20% empty seats, so what has happened to the 200,000 'trapped' Brits who simply can't get across the waters??? confused

It's not just T-Mobile either.

I'm off to Egypt in the summer and my provider Orange charges;

Call/ Receive
UK - £1.75/£1.00 per min
text message - 50p/free

And £8 per MB.

£1.75/minute!!

dont forget that approximately half of that cost per minute is being charged by the carrier in the foreign country. Still a rip off in this day and age, but unsurprising.

Why not just find a wifi hotspot and use Truphone, much cheaper to make calls.
