Just curious as people still give 56k warnings when posting a lot of pics.
So who still has it and why?

I had to use it in Ireland at my nan's in January, she lives out in the sticks and the concept of even getting the internet out there was laughable until recently.

Got very close to regressing to it when bloody Talk Talk took over 4 months to finally admit they had a technical fault that was affecting thousands of customers and were not sure when they'd be able to get me online. Bunch of tossers! mad

sky broadband here, regularly get download speeds of over 1MB/s. (note Mb/s wink )

you know when new things come out they are usually amazing. for instance, cars of 30 years ago, 0-60 in 7 seconds would have been almost rapid for most people. but...no, when dial-up came out, it still seemed painfully slow!

You guys are lucky - at least if your broadband company is ste you can switch at the end of your contract. Here in Hull we have one company (won't name them) and that is it - no BT lines allowed/available. If you want a phone line - you have to have them. If you want useable broadband - you have to have them.

I switched to mobile broadband for 18 months and never got more than two weeks good use without it grinding to a complete halt (mostly due to the number of users migrating to it!). I've had to go back to them because there is noone else and would absolutely love to be able to tell them to ram it and go to someone else - but I can't and they know it.

I can see houses that are in the BT area from my bedroom window - I wonder if they'd let me run a cable?

I allegedly have Broadband from BT which I think is 56k most of the time but now and again I get a quick blip of good speed to make me forget I am paying for "up to 8mb" and getting 56k....

Defender sound effects at the beginning?

I still use GSM for some data transfer.

History. When the many and various telephone companies got amalgamated into the GPO back in the mists of time, for some reason (probably not wholly unrelated to the fact it was wholly owned by the council, rather than evil shareholder types) remained independent.

After flotation in 1987, the share prices went up and down (I bailed at £12 or so, a while before it went into freefall: now trading at 47p).

The council sold approx 50%, and promptly pissed it up the wall on a wendyball stadium.

They are, from personal dealings, and hearsay, the worst people in the entire world at anything vaguely innovative. Amazingly, I had a light heart when I moved out of the area, at ringing BT and asking them to rape me.

OFCOM refuse to include them in their consumer choice rulings. Apparently, KCOM offering LLU capability is enough - even if that LLU is priced significantly beyond market sweetspots.

When I win the EuroMillions, a great big wodge of money will go to the establishment of a WiMax style infrastructure to remove the data elements of their business model, leaving them to concentrate on voice.

...and not a person I know actually likes them! It's not so much that their service is poor because whilst it's not without fault it's not terrible either - it's more their 'we can do what we want and if you don't like it tough' attitude. I have to pay £12 per month for the phone line (which we don't use for calls) and £16 per month a 1-3mbit/s connection with a 20gb allowance. Again, not terrible, but not great either. I think it's more their stinking attitude and lack of customer service that pisses everyone off (who else are you going to use!)
