My main computer is networked to my daughter's pc in her room, mainly for printer and internet sharing.

As she grows up, her friends are introducing her to websites I'd rather she didn't see, so is there any way I can "see" what she's looking at on my main PC downstairs?

If you want to be able to watch her screen then use

RealVNC - www.realvnc.com/

Or if you just want to see what she has been looking at then look in the browser history path:

on XP it is C:Documents and Settings\%username%Local SettingsHistory

Various other paths for difference versions of windows

Lots of ways - depends on how you want to do it....

1) Run a small proxy server on your PC that doesnt allow access to non-approved sites

2) Run a key monitoring program on the PC and keep a log of where she has been and look later

3) Install something like NetNanny and prevent her from accessing certain sites

4) Run a screen replication system such as VNC that can replicate her screen somewhere else (though be careful as its effectively remote control and if you move the mouse it will move hers!)

Lots and lots of other things.... might take a small investment, but to be honest I think its worth it.

For the best results, you can invest in a dedicated box to handle the internet access. Something like Smoothwall (a firewall solution built on Linux) is a cracking way to do this. The software is £200 and you need a PC as well (though a crappy old one will be more than sufficient - if you dont have a spare one, get an old one from eBay or a local computer fair for £50).

Take a look at the info though - you can control where a user can go, what they can see and also have a decent firewall to boot..... probably the cheapest commercial solution around.

There are freeware ones too - but rather than get involved in the intracies of installation, get a commercial one and dont worry about it.

One of the easiest and "best" ways to prevent undesireable surfing is to insist that the PC is used in a "public" room rather than her bedroom.

Or NetMeeting's Remote Desktop Sharing.
NM is probably installed even if there's no entry for it in Programs.
Start --> Run --> "conf" should fire it up...

Thanks for the info.

I don't want to restrict her access in any way as I believe in trust, its just her friends I don't trust so it would be handy just to have a quick look at what they are doing on-line, without them knowing it.

I think its better to let kids be edjucated by freedom of choice, rather than restrictions. If you say they can't do something, they'll only find an alternative route to see what they aren't allowed. If they are free to view anything, i'll retain control by always popping my head round the corner if something naughty is going on, but they won't know how I know, if you know what I mean.

I'm going to give the remote control program a bash - see how it preforms.

I've installed RealVNC, but don't know how the hell to use it.

*edit to add: I've figured it out.

Thanks for the offer Roadrage. RealVNC is perfect for what I need, don't really need stealth as I'm not intending to hack professionally.
